Moxibustion is a very important part of my treatments, I combine acupuncture, herbal and massage therapy with moxibustion treatments.
Moxibustion is a form of fire heat treatment when ignited moxa cone, needle with moxa or moxa stick is placed close to human body to warm the local area or specific acupuncture point (s).
The meaning of Moxibustion comes from the Japanese “mogusa” meaning herb (mugwort) and the Latin “bustion” meaning burning.
Moxibustion is believed to have originated in the northern part of China. In Mongolia, where winters are dominated by icy chilliness and wind, moxibustion has been used to treat various illnesses and degenerative diseases due to the extreme cold climate.
I consider moxibustion to be especially effective in the treatment of chronic problems, “deficient conditions” (weakness), longevity, sexual disorders, cold base diseases and gerontology. For years Japanese people has being use scarring moxibustion as an effective preventive treatment to maximize health and stimulate longevity.
Moxibustion is usually applied during acupuncture treatments.
Various Moxibustion techniques
Direct moxibustion: A small, cone-shaped amount of moxa is placed on top of an acupuncture point and burned on the skin. Direct moxibustion is a traditional technique considered to be very therapeutic. This technique happens to be my favorite moxa technique due to its effective and fast benefits.
In an attempt to prevent skin damage, I use a medium (slice of ginger, topical paste, etc.) between the skin and the burning moxa or extinguishes the burning moxa just before it reaches the skin.
Indirect moxibustion: i light one end of a moxa stick (roughly the shape and size of a cigar) and holds it an inch or two away from the skin, usually around the inserted needles to bring mild warmth to the area without burning, until the skin becomes slightly red. The intensity of the heat is adjusted according to the patient’s condition and comfort. Indirect moxa is considered to induce a gradual localized vasodilatation response. In addition to increasing the local blood flow, indirect moxibustion is extremely comforting and can create a deep relaxation response.
Needle Moxa Technique: Also know heat-conducting moxibustion is a combination of acupuncture and moxibustion at same time in specific acupuncture point. This specific technique is used for diseases in which retention of needle and moxibustion is required.
Infrared Heat lamp: In modern days and due to the inconvenience of lighting fire and create smoke environment in our modern living and practicing areas the use of infrared heat lamps is becoming part of our daily acupuncture treatments experience. The infrared heat lamps are designed to effectively conduct heat to specific area and to specific acupuncture points when needles are retain in the body.
